Why the track mounts at that line
Permanent lighting runs along the roof edge and the eaves because that line solves several problems at once. The eave is continuous across the elevation, which gives the light something to trace. It is high enough to throw light down the wall, and the overhang shelters the hardware.
The direction the light points
The channel can mount up under the soffit or out on the fascia, and that decision changes the effect. Mounted under the soffit, the light washes downward across the wall, which lights the building itself. Mounted on the fascia, it reads more as an outline against the sky. Which one is right depends on the house and on what you want it to do.Where the channel sits decides the reach down the wall, and that turns out to matter more than the brand of the hardware.
When the eave complicates things
Overhang depth varies a lot, and it changes the plan. A deep overhang shelters the hardware well and lets you tuck the channel out of sight, but it also shades the wall below. A shallow one leaves less to hide behind and pushes the mounting decision. This is why designs get drawn at the house rather than from a satellite image.
Beyond the holidays
A lit eave line is genuinely useful after dark. The practical version is finding your keys at the door, which sounds small until it is raining. It also keeps the house from disappearing after sunset.
Coordinating with other roof work
A lot of things live at the roof edge: gutters, guards, flashing, and now a lighting channel. If a roof or a gutter replacement is coming in the next year or two, say so during the consultation. Doing it backwards means paying twice for the same work. It is worth mentioning even if the roof work is only a maybe.
Two story houses have two eave lines
A single story house has one line to consider. Add a floor and there is a question to answer. The upper roofline gives you the strongest outline, since it sits against open air. The lower run lights the approach. Running both is often the answer, though it does not have to happen in the same year.
